How to Access Healthcare Without Insurance

Real affordable healthcare options for immigrants regardless of your status.

4 steps
Your progress — 0%0/4

Community Health Centers (FQHC)

Key step

Federally Qualified Health Centers serve everyone regardless of immigration status or ability to pay. Cost is adjusted based on your income (can be $0). They offer primary care, dental, mental health, and medications. Find them at findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov.

Medicaid and CHIP for families

Key step

Children who are U.S. citizens may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP even if a parent is ineligible because of immigration status. Eligibility depends on the child's circumstances, household income, state residency, age, and other program rules. Find your state's program at https://www.insurekidsnow.gov/coverage. Explore other government benefits and their requirements at https://www.usa.gov/benefit-finder.

Emergencies: your rights at the hospital

At hospital emergency departments covered by EMTALA, including most U.S. hospitals, you have a right to an appropriate exam to check for an emergency condition. If one is found, the hospital must offer stabilizing treatment or an appropriate transfer. These protections apply regardless of your ability to pay or whether you are a U.S. citizen. Registration questions must not delay required emergency care. Ask the hospital about financial assistance if you need help with a bill. Mental health and emotional support

Key step

Migration causes stress, anxiety, and trauma. Free resources available: SAMHSA Helpline in Spanish: 1-800-662-4357 (24/7), Crisis line: 988, National Alliance on Mental Illness: nami.org. Many community health centers have Spanish-language mental health services at low cost.
