Your progress — 0%0/4

Check your state's laws

Key step

More than 19 states allow driver's licenses regardless of immigration status, including California, New York, Illinois, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and others. If you live in one of these states, you can apply for a REAL ID or state license with immigration documents.

Gather your documents

Key step

Typically you will need: foreign passport + visa or I-94, EAD or Green Card (if applicable), proof of state residency (2 documents: utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement), and ITIN or SSN number if you have one.

Study the driver's manual

Each state has its own driver's manual available online and in Spanish at the state DMV. Study traffic signs, speed limits, and local laws. Many states have the written test available in Spanish. Practice with free online practice tests.

Pass the written and driving tests

Key step

Make an appointment at the DMV (some states have long waits). Bring all original documents. The written test covers signs and traffic laws (usually 80% to pass). If you fail, you can try again. The driving test evaluates basic skills on the road.
