How to Renew Your Work Permit (EAD)
Clear instructions for renewing your Employment Authorization Document before it expires.
USCIS recommends filing your renewal 180 days (6 months) before your current EAD expires. This is critical because processing can take 3-5 months. If your EAD expires while waiting for renewal, your case may qualify for automatic 180-day extension — check uscis.gov.
Identify your eligibility category
Your EAD has an eligibility category code (e.g., C09 for pending asylum, C08 for approved asylum, C33 for DACA, A12 for TPS). This code determines what documents you need for renewal. Find it on your current EAD or approval letter.
