How to Prepare for the Naturalization Interview
Everything you need to know for the U.S. citizenship test: civics, English, and the interview.
You need: to be a permanent resident (Green Card) for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen), have lived in the state where you're applying for 3 months, be 18 or older, good moral character, and commitment to the Constitution.
File Form N-400
Key stepThe N-400 costs $725 ($640 + $85 biometrics). You can apply online at uscis.gov/n-400. You need: Green Card, passport, passport photo, last 5 years of taxes, and evidence of continuous residence (no trips longer than 6 months).
Study the 100 civics questions
Key stepUSCIS has a list of 100 questions about U.S. history and government. During the interview they'll ask 10 questions and you must answer 6 correctly. Practice at uscis.gov/citizenship/find-study-materials-and-resources. There are also free mobile apps to practice.
Practice English
You must read and write one sentence in English during the interview, and show you can speak and understand basic English. There are age exemptions (50+ years with 20 years of residence, or 55+ with 15 years). Practice with USA Learns at usalearns.org.
The interview and oath ceremony
Key stepAt the interview bring your Green Card, passport, and any relevant documents. If you pass, you'll receive a date for the Oath Ceremony. At the ceremony you'll surrender your Green Card and receive your Certificate of Naturalization — you are now a U.S. citizen!
